With the popularization and use of LED lights, problems with LED lights have also arisen. Below are the reasons for the damage of LED lighting fixtures.
The failure of LED lighting fixtures is caused by the failure of the power supply and driver, as well as the failure of the LED components themselves. Usually, damage to LED power supplies and drivers comes from overvoltage surges (EOS) in the input power supply and open circuit faults at the load end. The overvoltage shock of the input power supply often causes damage to the driving chip in the driving circuit, as well as breakdown damage to passive components such as capacitors. Short circuit faults at the load end may cause overcurrent driving in the drive circuit, which may result in short circuit damage or overheating damage caused by short circuit faults. The main reasons for the failure of LED devices are as follows.
1. Electrostatic discharge event
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage is currently the most common transient overvoltage hazard in the manufacturing, transportation, and application of highly integrated semiconductor devices. LED lighting systems must meet the "human body electrostatic discharge mode" 8kV contact discharge standard of IEC61000-4-2 to prevent potential overvoltage impact failure during electrostatic discharge.
The performance of the LEDPN junction array will decrease or be damaged, and the internal failure of the LED chip caused by the discharge path of ESD events may only result in partial functional damage. In severe cases, it can also cause permanent damage to the LED light strip.
2. Transient overcurrent event
Transient overcurrent event refers to the current flowing through an LED exceeding the maximum rated current in the LED technical data manual. This may be directly caused by high current or indirectly caused by high voltage, such as transient lightning strikes, transient switching noise of switching power supplies, grid fluctuations, and other overvoltage events. These events are transient and have a very short duration, usually referred to as spikes, such as "current spikes" and "voltage spikes". The situation that causes transient overcurrent events also includes LED power on or transient overcurrent during live plugging and unplugging.
For LED light strips in cars, the transient load surge impact of ISO7637-2 is an important threat to their normal operation.
The failure mode of LED after being subjected to electrical shock is not fixed, but it usually leads to damage to the soldering wire. This type of damage is usually caused by significant transient overcurrent. In addition to causing the welding line to burn out, it may also lead to damage to other parts near the welding line, such as sealing materials.
